Dr. William Tidwel himself studied Marion's fossil and concluded that it is indeed a Monanthesia stantoni as Mel suggested. Dr. Tidwell is the author of the book "Common Fossil Plants for Western United States" an authority in Paleobotany and currently working at BYU. In the posting I made a while back, I wrongfully mentioned that his book did not have anything similar to Marion's, but I was wrong, the book shows a couple of photos and illustrations of Monanthesia.

This is only the second time a fossil of this species of plant has been ever found. The first one was also discovered in California but at the end of last century. How it got to the Vallejo area is still a mistery. Maybe it drifted and got fossilized at the bottom of the ocean.

Thank you Marion!
