Interesting Ammonite

Posted by Alex Lin on December 22, 1998 at 15:45:30:

Hi, everybody,

I am the current Presdient of GeoClub at Tenn. Tech. I got some interesting Morocco ammonite for trade. I call it "Hematite psuedomorpy after pyritized goniatitic ammonite."

Well, the school mineralogist confirmed that the sphere mineral aggregate grown around the ammonite is hematite psuedomorph after pyrite. Although the ammonite is less than one inch and a half, some of crystals of the mineral aggregates are big enough to tell they were pyrite before the alteration occured.

The ammonite itself, I think it belongs to Cheiloceras verneuli, found in Upper Devonian rock layers.

We also have some black Phacops africanus for trade. They are partially enrolled, and incomplete.

Alex
