Planolite explanation

Planolites are trace fossils made during the feeding process of ancient wormlike animals. Planolites is one of the most common trace fossil and ocurrs in sedimentary rock of all kinds. It is also one of the oldest of all fossils. In fact, the first trace of a multicellular animal is a Planolites burrow in Precambrian rock.

They are straight to gently curved, cylindrical or nearly cylindrical burrows filled with material different from that composing the matrix. Burrows more or less horizontal, or oblique to bedding planes, penetrating sediment in irregular courses; burrows may cross, but do not branch.
