This thing is starting to cause a stir...more info I received from paleo experts below...Peter From: mturner@snipthis.acpub.duke.edu (mel turner) -- snip the snipthis The specimen should probably be shown to a paleobotanist [I recall there are some at UC Berkeley if you are nearby], and as much detail as possible of its location of its origin ought be reported as well. I'm sure it's part of a large plant stem of some sort, even if it eventually turns out not to be a cycadeioid after all. Those leaf bases and axillary rosettes clearly show part of a [Fibonnaci] system of spiral parastichies. Maybe you've got something really exciting... Is the place where it was found in fact a Mesozoic outcrop? Are any cycadeoids previously known from the region? It might be worth sectioning it if it looks like there may be some preservation of structure in there. Perhaps it's something new and publishable... cheers Nan C. Arens is an excellent paleobotanist on the faculty at UCB. You should be able to find her e-mail address through either the Berkeley web page or the UCMP page. Marion, I took the liberty to send your e-mail address to Mel Turner.. you don't need a midlle man anymore.. good luck!!! Peter |
