: This fossil was found in or near the bed of a seasonal creek, 4 miles west of Copperopolis. The rock in the area are the "Tombstone" slates. Above the site area itself though is a high ridge, and is contains red sedimentary rock. The seasonal stream comes from this direction. Going out on a limb, my guess would be a rugose coral...which would put it back in time before the early Triassic. Would very much appreciate an i.d.! Hi Claire, nice find. Gee.. it looks like a piece of wood from a plant of some sort.. or could it be a coral? I have requested ID at the paleo newsgroup. Hope somebody there can help. What type of rock the fossil is?
