A colleague of mine, Dr. Gibert, seems to have the opinion that the mystery specimen is a rudist --which is a reef-building mollusk from the Mesozoic.

It's difficult to tell from the picture, but it doesn't look like the rudists (Durania maxima) from the Late Cretaceous Smoky Hill Chalk (Coniacian). See a photo on the webpage at: http://www2.southwind.net/~mjever/page3.html (longer load time)

Of course, Rudists come in a variety of shapes and sizes, and don't look like anything else, either.
