Thanks everyone for your responses. It now sounds as if we blew it and didn't go far enough! We parked where there is a campfire site, then walked the trail along the west side of the mountain's "fourth ridge," which ascended gradually around several bends, then appeared to peter out in some larger rocks. We climbed up those rocks (thinking that was the "steeper 100 yards at the end") to where there was a small hill with diggings to the right, and another hill maybe 50 feet to the left (or south), overlooking the valley. We dug all over the small hill, which had a ridge of large brown rocks across the top--I thought that was the "marker" as described on this website. So it now sounds like we were supposed to go further, down into the ravine to the west of these hills and back up the east side of the next ridge? I guess that would explain it--here we were digging all over a hill that I think is Brett's "dry hole." Well, we're talking about trying again in a few weeks anyway...at least we now know which of the "roads" to take from Cadiz to the parking area, and also to not let the kids get beef jerky and soda at the liquor store attached to the McDonald's on Main St. in Barstow--$30!!!
