I was just out to the site last weekend. Spent last weekend camping at Indian Cove in Joshua Tree. Went up to the trilobite site for the morning. It's getting hot out there. Yes. You should have gone further past the first hill (actually it's more like an area where it sort of levels off). There's somewhat of a faint trail that continues beyond that "level area." Keep hiking/scrambling along that level (don't climb too far up). Keep your eyes open for dark red, brown, or gray colored pieces of shale. When you see the shale pieces, follow them up to the source. While you are hiking/climbing up the shale, you'll probably see discarded specimens of trilobite fossils. I just brought along a rock hammer and had no problem finding all sorts of fossils - though not whole remains. If you want to get really serious, you might want to bring a small 5 pound hammer and some gads (rock chisels). You'll prbably find samll piles of good samples. I'll gather a pile of specimens and just pick out a few of the best and leave the pile for someone else to sift through.
