: Hey everyone. I was wondering if anyone knew the root of the whole Bakker vs. Horner conflict. can anyone shed some light on this for me? One of my friends has Horner as a teacher for one of her honor's classes (origins of the universe i believe), and we've been wondering what the root of it all was.
: Thanks in advance,

Not sure at all, but I thought it was over the warm-blooded vs. cold-blooded dinosaur thing, and how the paleontological data has been interpreted to support one view or the other. Could be also over the predator vs. scavenger T. rex thing.

Another underlying thing is, if I'm not mistaken, Horner doesn't have a PhD and Bakker does. When a non-PhD (read "dilettante", according to some PhDs) is good, and successful, it drives some of the PhDs wild.

I love how Spielberg handled it in the Jurassic Park movies. For those who aren't aware, Alan Grant (Sam Neill's character) is modeled after Horner; in fact Horner consulted on the movies. In Jurassic Park II, the paleontologist with the bad guys who's afraid of snakes and gets chomped by the Spinosaurus in the waterfall is Bakker all the way. Guess who Spielberg likes.
