spatiosus, whitneyi, arnoldi Upper Miocene Santa Margarita Formation Scotts Valley, California Just digged these ones out. Finished first step of prep: baking them on the oven. Perfecting my 4 years old prep procedure and have some good ideas on how to make the whole thing work better. The problem is to remove the encrusted sand without breaking the specimens. Hopefully, the majority will turn out for good trade quality. As the prep proceeds, I will post more pics. |
Astrodapsis prep step 2
Here is my new step 2 in the preparation of the Astrodapsis: cover one side with elastic caulk, right before immersing them into a strong solution of white vinegar and into an industrial strength ultrasonic cleaner. More pics of the prep sequence will follow. |
Astrodadsis prep step 3
This is a before and after picture after the ultrasonic cleaning process of six randomly selected specimens. The technique worked really well and NO specimens were broken. This is a first for me! The next step is to repeat the process and clean the undersides. Final pictures will follow in a few days. |
Astrodapsis finished
spatiosus, whitneyi, arnoldi These are some Astrodapsis ready for trade. The two from the top left are multiple specimens naturaly cemented. The very few breaks were glued with cyanoacrylate - crazy glue (reversible with acetone) and both sides were coated with a thin coat of Shellac to bring up detail (reversible in a bath of alcohol). As an example, I am showing a magnified view of specimen 'A' - which is shown on the bottom right of the pic of step 3 - to show close-up detail. |

| This was the Online Fossil Trade Show demo booth. Now it is just one example of how can a booth be arranged. These Astrodapsis - an extinct Miocene sand dollar unique to California - are for trade in the various steps of preparation shown. |
