THORNY LIZARD
SPINOSAURUS AEGYPTIACUS (STROMER, 1915) MID.CRETACEOUS Tegana Formation Ksar-es-Souk Region, Kem Kem basin, Moroccoan Sahara No doubt, this is a once-in-a-lifetime fossil. This wonderfully well-preserved hand claw belongs to Spinosaurus aegptiacus, a monster from Mid. Cretaceous that lived some 100 million years ago, when Northern Africa was then covered with a dense tropical forest. What made this dinosaur so peculiar was the presence of a sail on his back, supported by long spikes (hence the vernacular name "thorny lizard"), which he might have deployed and used either as an implement of seduction prior to mating, or as a way to indimidate his ennemies (hence the hypothesis that this sail might have been very gaudy), or as a thermoregulatory device. This carnivorous monster is thought to have fed on a diet mostly made of fish, perhaps completed with meat from other dead or alive flying dinosaurs such as Ptesosaurus (indeed a Spinosaurus tooth was found stuck in the vertebra of a specimen of this flying dinosaur). The hypothesis of a piscivorous diet is supported by the specific elongated shape of his snout, as well as by his sharp and conical teeth which the dinosaur might have used to seize his preys in the way crocodiles do. This claw shows amazing details, among which one can be considered as a testament to its authenticity, that is, the very many pores that cover the core of the claw, and that were once occupied by blood vessels.THIS CLAW IS NOT FOR SALE |
